POPULAR SPORTS.
The adjourned meeting of the sports committee was held yesterday; Mr Ollivier in the chair. The chairman reported that he had obtained a number of signatures to the memorial for a holiday, and the Hon. J. T. Fisher had promised to take charge of it at Wellington. The question of changing the locale of the sports was discussed at some length. Ultimately Mr Mitchell moved—- " That owing to the expense and difficulty of obtaining a proper running ground in the Domain, the sports on the forthcoming Anniversary Day be held in Latimer Square." Mr Hobbs seconded the motion. The chairman read a letter from Mr Wynn Williams supporting the selection of the Park as an experiment. After some further desultory discussion the motion was put and declared to be negatived. Mr Andrews then moved — " That the sports be held on the 17th Dec, in the Domain, on the site recently visited and inspected by the committee, and that the ground be at once prepared for the occasion." Mr Hebden seconded the motion. Mr Thomson pointed out that they were asked to lay out a new course without having before them any estimate at all of the cost. They must remember that the time was very short in which to collect the money for the sports, and hence they should know what was likely to be their expenditure. Mr Andrew.-? said that the cost of preparing the course would not exceed £B. Mr Hobbs moved as an amendment — " That if it is desirable to remove the sports from Latimer Square, the association negotiate with the Cricketing Association for the use of the cricket ground for the purpose of holding the sports." If they wanted to have a course in the domain they should commence to form the course about June, when it would be in excellent order For the sports in the summer. Messrs Hebden and Ollivier pointed out that ther would not he *ble to get the cricket ground as matches would of course be played on Anniversary Lav. The amendment was not seconded. Ultimately Mr Andrews withdrew his resolution. Mr Hebden moved—- " That Messrs Andrews and Walkden be elected as a committee to report at next meeting up-jn the probable expense of making ■x course on the Hagley Park ground for the present year." Mr Andrews seconded the motion, which was agreed to. The committee then proceeded to consider the programme, and afterwards adjourned*
