WESLEYAN DISTRICT MEETING.
The session on Wednesday commenced at 10 a.m. After devotional exercises, in which the Revs. W. H. Beck and W. Worker took part, the minutes of the previous day were read, and the meeting proceeded to the oral examination in theology of the candidate for the ministry. The Rev. W. Cannell stated that a churchsite had been offered at Ambcrlcy, and the people in the district were prepared to support a minister. On the motion of the Rev. J. S. Smalley, seconded by the Rev. W. Worker, it was agreed to recommend to Conference the appointment of a Minister to Amborley, as a Home Mission station.
The following recommendations to the Conference were also made : 1. “That the executive committee of the Church Extension Association be requested to frame regulations for the employment of lay agents as home missionaries, defining their status and relation to the quarterly meeting, and that such missionaries be required to report annually to the district meeting, and abstracts of the reports be published in the district minutes.”
2. “ That there are places in the colony where ministerial labour is required, and where circuits with a complete organisation, and full financial liabilities cannot at the outset be formed, when a minister is appointed to any such place it be designated a Home Mission Station, and the minister or other agent in charge be required to furnish a quarterly report to the general secretary, through the chairman of the district.”
3. “ That the executive committee of the Church Extension Association bo requested to supply a brief sketch of the operations of the Association for general distribution, also placards, collecting-books, and boxes.”
A memorial to the Conference on the temperance question, numerously and influentially signed by residents in Waimate, was presented. The memorialists urged the formation of temperance societies in connection with the various churches of the Wesleyan body. It was resolved, “That the memorial be forwarded, and the Conference be requested to consider the practicability of adopting the recent legislation of the British Conference as to the formation of Bands of Hope and Temperance Societies in immediate connection with the Church.”
