Stuart, and Couche, merchants, are defendants in a Supremo Court action. The plaintiff was a carter in their employ. He claimed £IOOO damages for bodily injuries sustained by loss of eye-sight through the negligence of the defendants in not protecting a hydraulic lift ou their premises. The jury awarded the plaintiff £220. The Bill for a railway to connect tho Gippsland line with Melbourne by a direct route is being discussed, and is sure to pass the Assembly. Bills have been introduced to make the necessary provision in regard to the International Exhibition, and also for forts and armament. ft is the intention of some members to oppose all Sir Win. Jcrvoi-i’s recommendations, Brisbane. The contributions of this colony to the Indian Famine Fund will amount to £2OOO.
