The Globe. TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 20, 1877. NEWS OF THE DAY.

Board of Education. —The special meeting of the Board of Education, to further consider the Loburn case, will be held at 3 p.m. on Thursday. East Belt Bridge. —On the motion of Or. Ick it was resolved at last night’s meeting, to write to the Avon and Heathcote Road Boards to each appoint a committee to meet a committee of the Council in conference, to consider what steps should be taken for erectin a bridge over the river at the East Town Belt.

Hoardings to Buildings. —The subject of insufficient hoardings for the public protection being provided in front of buildings in course of erection throughout the city, was referred to last night in the City Council. Cr. Thomson hoped that in such cases the permission would be withdrawn, and the contractor proceeded against for every day he continued to work afterwards. Acclimatisation Society. —At a meeting of the Council of the Acclimatisation Society, held yesterday, it was found that so far from having some hundreds of young trout for sale none remained. A return presented by the curator in August last estimated the number of ova at some 18,000, and afterwards he stated that the number of fish hatched out would be about 11,000. After, however, some 4000 had been sold, it was discovered that only some forty fish remained. The Council yesterday, after a lengthened discussion, resolved to discharge the curator, giving a month’s salary in lieu of notice. A letter was read from Mr R. J. Creighton, of San Francisco, stating that he had arranged witli Mr Craig, of San Francisco, to send a consignment of trout ova. He also thought that lie should be able to get over prairie chickens, which, with care, he considered would be able to be landed alive. In order to make the matter a certainty, he had arranged with a correspondent at Topeka to send eggs of the prairie chickens to bo hatched out. by incubator. He had further arranged with the Oregon railroad company to forward grouse. It was resolved that the thanks of the Society he tendered to Mr Creighton for his untiring efforts on behalf of the Society. It was resolved to turn some of the Californian salmon into the Avon below Lane’s Mill.
