THE MELBOURNE CUP RACE.
[By Teleobaph.]
Meleouene, November 8,
The course presented a grand sight. The number present was, at the lowest estimate, 80,000. Of those nearly 40,000 travelled by rail. Wot weather prevented so much display of ladies’ toilets as has generally been the case. The race was a splendid one. Eillibuster, Fisherman, and Savanaka, made most of the running, Chester keeping well to the front. In the last half-mile Chester disposed of his horses one by one, but Savanaka made a a grand rush at the finish, and nearly caught Chester. He only won by half a length. Time—Omin. 33-isecs., the fastest yet. The bookmakers lost heavily, but not so much ao if Savanaka had won, as ho carried a pot of money. The running was very true, as the order in which the horses finished after Chester was—Savanaka, Vagabond, Tom Kirk, G-lenormiston, Woodlands, Pluto, Amendment.
The racing generally for the other events was very good, some extraordinarily fast time being made. Talk of the Yale van a mile and a half in the Maiden Plate in 2min. 42.' f sec3., carrying 9st., which was a better performance than that of Chester in the Derby in 2min. 43secs.
