CRICKET

THE COLTS' MATCH. This annual match was played as usual on the Prince of Wales' Birthday, and finished out on Saturday afternoon. Previously it has been the custom to play fifteen colts, with a captain, but on this occasion, as there are so many new cricketers and the eleven were so strong, it was thought that the number should be increased. Twenty-four besides the captain did battle for the colts, and, as it will be seen, proved too formidable notwithstanding the strong bowling and batting force brought against them. The match produced some very good cricket, and showed that in L. Mathias, Skelton, and Hartland our cricket strength is likely to receive an addition. The first plays with a nice straight bat and in good style, but wants to learn to play back occasionally, as he is rather inclined to play forward at everything, and with attention at practice should develop into a first-class cricketer. Skelton is a fine field and also a good longstop, so that he is also useful in an eleven, and in this match has shown that he can also bat. As thi3 is the first season that he has played on a good ground he will probably soon become more oertain, and with practice always good for runs. Hartland played very steadily and has a good defence, but is a trifle slow in playing the fast bowling; he hits well to the off, but is weak on the leg side; fields very well and showed by the two catches that he made that he is a good judge of a catch. Cuff bowled remarkably well in the first innings, his analysis showing at one time 25 overs, 21 maidens, 6 runs for four wickets. Beaumont bowled well, and, with the numerous field, was very successful. Had all the catches been taken his analysis would have shown to much better advantage. Peter, in the second innings, although not very straight, was very destructive. The fielding of the Colts, on the whole, was very creditable. For the Eleven Fuller bowled very well at first, and Ashby at one time was very difficult to play, the balls which dismissed Gribson, Austin, Izard, and Allen being very fine. The Colts were the first at the wickets, but the wickets fell very fast until Row and Eeeder became partners, the former hitting freely for his score of 15 ; but he ought to have been caught off the first hit. His chief contributions were a '4, a good hit to square leg, a 3, and a2. Reeder, after playing steadily for some time, failed to stop a good hall from Fuller, having made 11 in all, in which was a 4, the rest being singles. Skelton played well for his 18, which he put together without giving a chance ; two 3's and two 2's were his best hits. The wickets falling rather fast, Ollivier went in, and, with Mathias, 60011 increased the score; however, in trying a very fast run, the former had to retire, in consequence of a splendid piece of fielding between Leach and Godby. Hartland joined Mathias, and some nice cricket was shown between these two young players. The bowling was changed several times, but without effect, until Mathias gave a chance to Moore at point—having made 29 by fine play ; his chief contributions were two 3's and four 2's. No other stand was made, and Hartland, who did not give a chance, carried out his bat for 16, made up by three 2's and singles. The innings closed for 157. The Eleven then went in, but soon lost the first three wickets —the first falling for 10; 2 for 26 ; 3 for 27. Godby and J. Fowler played on until time was called, although the fatter should have been caught five times. Upon resuming, J. Fowler was not so fortunate as before, as Beaumont made a fine catch off his own bowling. The remaining wickets soon fell, and with the exception of Sweet, who made 14 by two 4's, a 3, a 2, and a single, no double figure was obtained. The total of the inninga being only 73, a follow on was necessary, but with no better success. Sweet was well caught by Ataok—ono for 16 ; Corfe was bowled off his leg pads—two for 19; J. Fowler was neatly taken by Cuff at short-slip, and Godby let an easy one pass—three for 21 ; four for 22. Allington was well caught by Hartland at long-leg -five for 28. Neilson and Ashby, however, brought the score to 54 before the former was caught behind the wicket; Ashby being disposed of in a similar way. Fuller was caught off his first hit—six, seven, and eight for 54. Morrison was also caught behind the wickets, and Wood failed to stop a straight ball from Peter, the total falling 11 short of that of the first innings. The Colts thus won by an innings and 22 runs. The following is the score :

On Saturday the match between the two clubs will be commenced, and judging from the players in the respective teams it should be a close and interesting game. For the TJ.C.C.C. Corfe, Moore, Ashby, Godby, Ollivier, Neilson, and perhaps Alington and Lee, will be the chief batting strength; while for the bowling they will have C. Frith, Ashby, Corfe, Moore, Neilson, and Lee, if he can play. The M.C.C.C. are also well represented in Allen, E. and J. Fowler, Macdonnell, Watson, Wood, and Sweet, if he makes up his mind to Iplay steadily. For bowlers they have Fuller, Sweet, E. and J. Fowler, and Turner. As the match will be played out, we expect to see a close game. SUNNYSIDE v. NORMAL SCHOOL. This match was played at Sunnyside om Saturday, and resulted in a draw, time not permitting the game being played out. Mr Howard acted as captain for the School team, and Mr Crawford for Sunnyside. The principal feature of the game was Mr G-. Watson's magnificent innings of 90, not out, being exactly one-half of the School score. On time being called at 6.30 Sunnyside had lost four wickets for 63 runs. Appended are the full scores of a most enjoyable game : Normal School. G.
