Wellington, November 10. About four thousand people attended the sports on the cricket ground yesterday. His Excellency was present. The great event of the day was the seven-mile walking match between Edwards of Wellington and Bowley of Christchurch. It was keenly contested from start to finish, and considerable excitement was elicited. At last both men made a desperate effort, and finished so close that the judge gave it as a dead heat, though the crowd generally said Edwards won by a shoulder. In response to a requisition the Mayor will call a public meeting, on Monday evening, to take into consideration the present position of affairs in the House of Representatives. The officers of Volunteer companies which took part in the sham fight and review were entertained by Major Stavely at dinner, in the City Hotel, last night. The chair was occupied by Major Stavely and the vice by Major Wales. In proposing the health of Major Stavely, Captain Mackorie said that no warmer heart existed beneath a uniform than that of their host. Not only was he popular in his own district, but visitors to the review that day could not help acknowledging his sterling qualities. The Italian Opera continues to draw large houses, and the Dunedin press speaks most favourably of the performances.
