WAR ITEMS. THE CAMBRIDGESHIRE STAKESRECOVERY OF CLEOPATRA’S NEEDLE. Auckland, November 6. By the steamer Rotorua, which has arrived from Sydney, the following items of European news, published in the papers of that city, have been received : London, October 17. Chefket Pasha, after passing a third convoy into Plevna with provisions and ammunition, was returning towards Orchanie when he succeeded in capturing from the Russians at Eltehic large supplies of cattle. A Turkish army corps, while concentrating near the Danube, had a slight skirmish with the Russians near Kadoroe. The Egyptian troops 'have been sent to Varna. Sulieman Pasha’s positions have been bombarded by the Russians from floating batteries. The Russians in the Hainkoi defile have been reinforced by two additional corps. Sulieman Pasha reports that the roads are unfit for the movements of troops. The contemplated visit of the Empress of Russia to Bucharest has been abandoned in consequence of the removal of the Russian head-quarters to Sistova. October 24. The following are the winners of the Cambridgeshire Stakes.Prince Darmberg’s Jongleur 1 Lord Hartingclon’s Belphoebe 2 Merton’s Gladiola ••• 3 Sir H. G. Elliott succeeds the Right Hon. Sir Andrew Buchanan as English Ambassador at Vienna, During the Kaffir outbreak on the frontier 8000 Gileiks attacked the colonial police, and 2000 Eiugoes were twice repulsed. The Cape troops and volunteers are moving to the front. Cleopatra’s Needle, which was being towed to London, and which was abandoned in the Bay of Biscay on the 17th consequent on a heavy gale, was recovered on the 24th.
