AQUATICS.

At a committee meeting held last evening the following were duly elected members of the Canterbury Rowing Club : —Messrs P. Allison, E. M. Boulton, S, Cook, A, Guy, and W. Dunnage was elected coxswain. The fouroar race for the President’s Cup has been indefinitely postponed, while the race for maiden fours has been fixed for the Ist Dec. At present the season promises to be a most successful one. A large and varied programme has been drawn up, the first event on which is senior and junior handicap sculling races, for prizes presented by Messrs R. J. S. Harman and Sandstein. Though no entries have actually been sent in as yet, still a large field may be looked for in both senior and junior races, as there are already a good number of intending competitors in active training, the sculling boats being out night and morning. Up till towards the close of last season two obstacles stood in the way of sculling on the Avon the winding nature of the river and the non-possession by either club of proper sculling boats. The latter of thes« obstacles was overcome by the C.R.C. importing two first-class sliding sculling boats from England, and steady and persevering practice on the part of a number of members overcame the former, the competition for both senior and junior events resulting in very closely and well contested races, Messrs L. M. Ollivier and Callender being the respective winners. The first contest this season has been fixed for the 21th instant, and, judging from the amount of training which is going on, these events will be attended with far greater success than they were last year. Por the President’s cup two crews are already in training, and when the date of the race is definitely fixed, doubtless others will lose no time in coming forward. maiden four-oar race one crew has been doing heavy work for the past fortnight preparatory to going in the outrigger. Next week it is expected that two or three other crews will commence doing likewise for the same event, and it is hoped this race will have the effect of introducing some blood into the contest for the more important races which are arranged to come off during the season.
