MAGISTRATES' COURTS.
CHEISTCHURCH. Friday, Novembbb 2. [Before C. Whitefoord, Esq., E.M.J Drunkenness. George Newman was charged with drunkenness and with the. wilful destruction of private property, at Alchin's boarding-house, valued at iiOe. He had nothing to say, aud as he was suffering from the effects of drink, his Worship remanded him till next morning. Joseph; Hughes, was fined 10s. Failing to Support.—Charles Cant was charged, at the instance of his wife, with failing to support his family. Inspector Buckley said that, as instructed by Mr Mellish, R.M., he had made inquiries concerning CharlesCant, and had found that he had been an in» mate of the Hospital since the Bth of September, and was likely to remain there for some time, as he was suffering from abscess in the side. Mra Cant said that her boy earned 12s a week, and that she herself took in washing. The Magistrate thought she should be able to live on such earnings. At any rate he could not make an order against her ailing husband. The case was remanded till the 29th instant. Horse Stealing.—James Morris, alias William Smith, was charged, on warrant issued at Hokitika, with Btcaling a horseSergeant O'Malley, stationed at Hokitika, 9aid he had arrested the man at Addington yesterday. The prisoner was remanded to Hokitika. Children.—William and J ©he Lloyd, aged respectively twelve and nine' years, were brought up as neglected children.. Sergeant Wilson stated that the boys hacf.i recently be<;u deserted by their v nother, and ; Lhey were wandering about she town with no' one lo look after thoiu. Their father hanHefi them and their mother a!>out two years ago. His Worship! ordered tlie boys to sent to the Industrial School, and to be kept there till they WW neepecti-vely thirteen years of a§e.
