The Governor has refused permission to use the Government House and grounds for a fete in aid of the Indian Famine Fund. The decision having been notified to the committee by the Colonial Secretary, the fete has been adjourned. Wellington, November 1. A telegram from Singapore, dated October 31st, advises that the cable between Singapore and Penang has been restored. A report which appeared a few days ago in a local paper, stating that H.M.S, Sappho had been aground some hours at the entrance to Wellington harbor, is positively contradicted by her commander, Captain Digby. The mistake is supposed to have arisen from the fact of the Sappho having been at anchor at the heads at the time referred to for about a couple of hours. Dunedin, November 1. The new Ministry appears desirous of pushing on the Waipahi to Tapanui railway. From a statement made at the Waste Land Board yesterday it appears that a block of land to the extent of 45,000 acres, and valued at £50,000, has been set aside for the purpose.
