The schooner Hannah Barrett arrived on Saturday night from Wellington, with a cargo of railway iron for the General Government. The master, Captain Eenner, reports leaving Wellington at noon on the 25th with a strong N.W. gale, which lasted to the Kaikonras, when the wind became baffling and unsettled. At 4 p.m. on Friday, 26th, passed to windward of a derelict vessel with stern out of water ; immediately wore round and stood towards her for the purpose of ascertaining if there were any survivors still on the wreck; passed within twenty yards of the vessel, but saw no signs of life —the name on the stern was " Clan Alpine, of Auckland." The stern projected eight or ten feet above the water, the vessel being nearly perpendicular, no doubt the air in the afterhold keeping her afloat. The vessel was right in the track of steamers, being about six to seven miles off the Conway Eiver, and about fifteen miles to the southward of Kaikoura Peninsula. Seeing no appearance of any one aboard, and the sea being too rough to launch a boat, except for the purpose of saving life, Captain Eenner proceeded on his voyage, having strong westerly winds to Motonau, and thence to arrival baffling easterly winds. The schooner Eeward arrived last night. Her master, Captain Westlake, reports leaving Wellington on Thursday at 7 a.m., and having N.W. weather to Kaikoura, thence W.S.W, to within a short distance of the Heads, after which light northerly to arrival. Eeports passing Fawn, brig, off Aianri Bluff, The back of the steamer Express, wrecked at Eiverton, is found to be broken, and the hull is now being raised and removed in two separate sections.
