INDIAN FAMINE RELIEF FUND.

A meeting of the Belief Fund Committee was held at 4 p.m. yesterday in the Council Chamber. Present—His Worship the Mayor, Messrs Gould, Nathan, Ollivier, Pratt, and Hoskina. Mr Ollivier reported that he had received a first instalment of £3OO from Timaru, with an intimation that a second and final instalment would be received after the 27th inst., on which date the lists would close there. Mr Nathan and Mr Pratt handed in further subscriptions they had received. Mr Ollivier said the subscriptions already receivedamounted to £2278 12s 6d. With the takingsat the fete, and lists yet to come in from fr»o or three of the outlying districts, the committee would have in hand a very little under £3OOO. (Applause.) He had advised the president of the committee for distributing the Belief Fund at Madras of the instalment already forwarded, and would like to receive authority to send on a second instalment. Mr Gould suggested they should telegraph to Melbourne to catch the outgoing mail leaving there the beginning of next week. It was resolved that Mr Gould and Mr Ollivier be authorised to transmit a further sum to the extent of the funds, and those gentlemen promised to meet on Saturday next for that purpose. Mr Ollivier referred to the letter he had written to one signed "Spero Meliora," which had appeared in the "Lyttelton Times," and said the letter had certainly been written tinder a misapprehension. He desired to mention that whon in Waimate lately he found that though it was a large district nothing had been done there in the matter of <,'oVi2>ct.ing subscriptions. He spoke to the Rev. Mr Coates, and also to the chairman of the Council, and the latter gentleman had promised to call a meeting for that purpose, 1(, was resolved to make up the list of subscriptions for publication early next week. It was decided to hold another meeting on Thursday next. The committee then adjourned,
