Railway Works in Otago. Auckland, October 23. The s.s. City of New York, with the outward San Francisco mail, passed the Bay of Islands at half-past three this afternoon. G-rahamstown, October 23. The fund, for rewarding the men who rescued miners from the gas in the Caledonian mine, has reached £BO. The committee have decided to present the rescuers with a gold watch each, suitably inscribed. A committee has been appointed to collect subscriptions for the relief of the sufferers by the Indian famine, and an active canvass is going on. Masterton, October 23. This afternoon James McDougall, aged about fifty, was arrested for attempted rape on a young child. He will be brought up tomorrow, but is expected to be remanded till Monday, the regular Court day. Q-reymouth, October 23. The locomotive which went into the river through the collapse of the harbor works, was recovered last night. During the night about two chains of the harbor works disappeared in the river, carrying with it a large crane, which is now in the stream. A special meeting of the Borough Council was held to-day, at which it was unanimously resolved to memoralise the Government to stop making the works of sand and to substitute stone. Dunedin, October 23. Mr Sperrey, late Provincial Sub-Treasurer, has received nine months’ leave of absence, and leaves for England to-morrow. At a meeting of the City Council, held today, Mr Lawson’s plans were referred to the Town Hall committee, with power to call for tenders. The Mayor stated that since he entered upon his duties he found it necessary to give certain instructions to the officials in regard to the manner of keeping the accounts, but they did not think that they should obey them unless they emanated from the committees interested. He considered that if instructions were given by him to the Corporation officers it ought to be sufficient for them. He intimated that he would resign unless the Council supported him. He would determine in a day or two what course ho would pursue.
[from the correspondent op the press.] Milford Harbor Works. Timaru, October 23. A public meeting was held at Temuka last night regarding proposed Milford Harbor Works. There was a good attendance. Mr Hardy Johnston, the engineer, read a report on the works, and it was resolved to accept the report and forward it to the member for Geraldine, with a request that he would bring in a Bill, constituting a Harbor Board, and giving an endowment of 50,000 acres and borrowing powers. The propounders of the scheme have given up all idea of getting a portion of the money voted for the Timaru breakwater] alienated for the Milford works. Mr J ohnston’s scheme is generally considered by outsiders to be extravagant and unworkable. At least ±'3oo is expected to be raised in Timaru for the Indian Belief Fund.
