S Board ok Education. —The usual meeting | of the Hoard was held yesterday. The report j of the Secretary on the teaching of history in j the Kaiapoi school was read, and a resolution carried to the effect, that the Board consider j that the charges have not been proved, but | think it is desirable that teachers should carej fully guard against dealing with questions of j history in a manner which might be offensive ito any section of the community. Some correspondence from the Catholic priest at s Rangiora, and from Mr Cunningham, was read lon the subject of the Loburn flogging case, and, after considering it, the Secretary was instructed to write to Mr Binsfeld, stating ithat the Doai’d think it desirable that an inquiry should take place, and asking to be furnished with some data on which such inquiry could be made. Several members of the Colombo Road School Committee waited on the Board, to urge the speedy erection of 1 a school suitable to the district, but, after j discussion, they stated that they would prefer ■ to wait and seo what the Government voted i for education before coming to any decision. Diocesan Synod. —The Synod met yesterday afternoon. Several reports were brought up. It was resolved that the primate be requested to issue a form of prayer for use during the continuance of the Indian famine. The Dean obtained leave to introduce a bill | for amending the 12th clause of the Cemetery Regulations by the addition of the •words — | “ The insertion of photographs in gravestones |is altogether prohibited.” It was resolved that the evening service be held on the day of the opening of the Synod, and that the standing committee be requested to make the necessary arrangements in connection with the annual Church meeting. The Synod went into committee on the Financial Regulations Bill. After other formal business the Synod rose at 6.30. On resuming at 7.30, the Dean laid on the table the audited accounts of the Church property estate and other funds. The Synod then went into committee on certain resolutions with reference to raising money by the Church Property Trustees on debentures to meet the requirements of parishes and parochial districts. Certain amendments were moved in committee, and on the chairman reporting the resolutions as amended to the Synod, they were agreed to. The Synod then adjourned till four o’clock to-day. Indian Relief Fund,— Wo observe that it is int ended to remit to Madras, on Monday noafi, (lie sum of £IOOO on account of the Indian Relief Fund, but it must bo remembered that it! order to enable the committee to carry this into effect, the subscriptions promised should be forwarded without delay to the treasurer, at the City Council offices. On Tuesday Mr .1. L. Hall and Mr Hoskintgivo benefits at the Gaiety and Theatre Royal on behalf of the fund. We hope that there will be a large attendance at both places. It will be seen from our London telegram of the lOlhinst., which appears elsewhere, that the sum of £350,000 has been subscribed in England. At the date of tbs Au’awata leaving Melbourne, it may also, be noted that the amount in the hands of the Mayor of Melbourne lo ‘ill? credit of futid was 3>7,4'QS,

Public Holiday. —The Mayor of Lyttelton has proclaimed the afternoon of Wednesday next, tho day on which the Waterworks are to be officially opened, a public holiday. Public Holiday. —The Mayor invitei the citizens to close their places of business at noon on Tuesday next, to enable all to attend the Costume Cricket Match and other sports in aid of the Indian Famine Relief Fund. United Canterbury Cricket Club.— The match between North and South will be continued on Saturday next. All the players engaged in it are requested to be on the ground punctually at two o’clock.
