NEWS OF THE DAY.
o Borough oe Sydenham.—The candidates for election as councillors of the Borough of Sydenham wall address the ratepayers on matters relating to the borough, in the schoolroom, Colombo road, at 7 o’clock this evenmg. St Paul’s Presbyterian Church. This handsome, though not harmoniously designed, church will seen be out of the hands of the’ builder and artificers. It is being enclosed by means of a neat wooden fence, in which apparently, no provision is to be made for access from Madras street to the side door of the church. This is to be regretted, as a gate opposite the door in question would bo an undoubted convenience to the congregation. Correction.—ln our report of the assault case heard at the R. M. Court yesterday an error occurred in the evidence of Mr I'rankish, The latter part should have read as follows, not as printed : —“ It was impossible to pacify him. I tried very much to do so, but failed. Wilson actually put his hands on his wife.”
Costume Cbicket Match. — A meeting was held at Radeliffe’s Hotel last evening, for the purpose of arranging matters in connection with the amusements to be held on Tuesday next on the cricket ground, in aid of the Indian Famine Relief Fund. Mr J. Ollivier and Mr R. R. Palmer were requested to wait upon the managers of the several Ranks, the leading merchants, and tradesmen of the city, to ask them to close their places of business at noon on that day. They were also requested to obtain the permiss on of a number of gentlemen to act as stewards and gate-keepers. A working committee of eight was appointed to make all arrangements, and to report to a general meeting to be held at Sideline’s Hotel, on Monday evening, at 8 sharp. It was decided to request Mr H. Thomson to act as treasurer, and Mr C, E Briggs promised to fulfil the duties of score-' kll T- the players will, hy invitation, dine with Mr Ruddiffe. at his' hotel, after the match. Mr E W. Millett has kindly offered to chive tlie players to the cricket ground on the morning of the match, and Mr J. L. Hall, in addition to assisting the players in proriding their costumes, has generously offered to give half the gross proceeds of the evening’s receipts at the Gaiety Theatre, and to superintend the Richardson’s Show on the ground. Those who have arranged with Mr Hall for costumes are requested to cal] at the Gaiety to‘day, between twelve and two,
