FRESH TAXATION.
To the Editor of the (Hole. Sib, — The Drainage Board as Local Board of Health is again at its work endeavoring t< obtain powers from the Assembly to rate tin city up to 2d in the £. Surely the citizens will not allow this Act to pass—the second reading thereof has taken place—without a public meeting being called to stop that body from obtaining further powers of rating. The city hitherto has had its wants attended to under the powers of the City Council, and judging from past experience of the work done by the Drainage Board, for which wc are paying tivepence in the pound, it would be as well to leave it so. The citizens were quite alive to the fact when they passed a resolution, at ai recent public meeting, that that Board should not exercise within the city any power but that for drainage of water only. It would be a very good thing for Christchurch if we had never had a Drainage Board; and, if they will persist in their mania for rating, the sooner the whole matter is thoroughly taken up by the citizens, with the view of closing their expensive establishment, the better. RATES.
