MORE TAXATION.

To the Editor of the Globe. Sir, —I notice in this morning's telegrams that the Public Health Amendment Act was read a second time in the House of Representatives. I wonder how many of the ratepayers of this city are aware that this Bill was promoted by the members of the Christchureh District Drainage Board, or Local Board of Health, which are the same bodies, for the purpose of giving them power to levy an additional rate of 2d in the £ over the whole district ? Now, so far as Christchureh is concerned, the public health has always been looked after by the civic authorities, the immediate repre* sentatives of the people, without a farthing additional taxation, the costs always coming out of the general rate, the same as in every other municipality in New Zealand. Surely the over burdened ratepayers ofChrisrchurch will not stand tamely by and allow this Bill to be rushed through Parliament in the same way the Drainage Bill was. Are the people prepared to give the Drainage Board more power to levy rates inside the city ? What in all conscience is taxation coming to in this devoted city ? What with general rates, watering rates, Drainage loan rates, asphalting rates, Waimakariri rates, Drainage Board rates, Local Board of Health rates, with many others that are looming in the future, how will it be possible to live here and make too ends meet. No time should be lost in petitioning against this new tax, and I hope some abler pen than mine will takeiup the matter, and, if necessary, let % meeting of the ratepayers be called at the earliest opportunity to give expression to their opinions. Yours, <tc, RATEPAYER.
