FIRE IN PAPANUI ROAD.

About twenty minutes past one yesterday afternoon a fire broke out in the workshop of ■a four-roomed house on the Papanui road, occupied by F. Hermann Von Schoenberg, cabinet-maker. Schoenberg had left the house about ten minutes before with some friends, and a neighbor who saw the fire, having burst in the front door, found the whole of the workshop on fire, and the bedroom, which was adjoining, filled with smoke. Several persons who came to his assistance tried to remove the furniture, but only succeeded in getting out a chest of drawers and portion of a bedstead before the whole house was in flames. A cottage next door, in which a Mr Jansen and family lived, was soon communicated with, and though all the furniture was saved by the aid of friends and the Hook and Ladder Company, the building was burnt to the ground. In a little while, all danger was over, but some of Mrs Braidwood's furniture was damaged by removal and water. Schoenberg was in the habit of using the workshop as a kitchen, and had a tire in it yesterday morning, but as he had thrown some water on it, supposed he had put it out before leaving. There was a quantity of chips and shavings on the floor, and it is thought that some embers were blown among them. The house was held on lease, and was insured by Mr Wood (of Messrs Montgomery md Co.y for £l2O. Schoenberg was not insured, and estimates his loss at £B4. The house occupied by Mr Jansen is believed to have been insured, but it is not known for how much. His personal loss is about £5. The damage done to Mrs Braidwood's houseis estimated at £ls. She was not insured,
