LOCAL BOARD OF HEALTH.

The usual meeting oi' the above Board was held at the termination of the Drainage Board meeting ; Mr F. Hobbs in the chair. chairman's remarks. The Chairman desired to bring under the notice of the Board that a special meeting of the City Council was called for that evening, for the purpose of considering the desirableness of taking over the powers of the Local Board of Health. Though, personally, he had no objection to the Council having those powers, still it would be matter for the Board’s consideration whether it would be judicious to hand them over. At present, the Council were allowed to make their own inspection, and during the present session of Parliament it might not be advisable to take the action that would be required to transfer the powers desired. He wished however to correct a remark reported to have been made by the Mayor at the last meeting, viz., that the Local Board of Health were not carrying out the work in a proper manner. He (the chairman) had merely to say that the work was being most efficaciously carried out. However, as he had mentioned before personally, he would have no objection to the powers being given to the Council if the Board thought it would be the best course. At the suggestion of Mr Hall further discussion on this subject was deferred until next meeting, when he hoped they would have a fuller attendance. inspector’s report. The usual report of the inspector was read and approved. GLOUCESTER STREET BATHS. A report from the engineer and Air Thomas Cane, architect to the Board of Education, was read saying they had found the sides of the above bath sound and impervious to water, and the bottom good and tight, except at the deepest end where the concr. te vas softer, but showed no signs of any leak sufficient to ace -unt for the retention of water on the surface of adjoining sections. They were of opinion that the water in the bath was not the cause of such retention, but recommend the covering of a portion of the bottom with a layer of good concrete to protect the present under layer, and stop the insignificant leaks which at present appeared. After passing some accounts the Board adjourned.
