MAGISTRATES' COURTS.
CHRISTCHURCH. Saturday, Octobeb 6. (Before G. L. Mellish, Esq., R.M.) Drunkenness. John Meehan, charged with being drunk and disorderly, was fined 10s. Lunacy fbom Deink —James Fisher, who had been suffering from lunacy through drink, was brought up from Lyttelton gaol, having recovered. He was dismissed. Drunkenness and Destruction of Property.—James Toohy, a new arrival, was charged with being drunk and disorderly, and with destroying a pane of glass in the window of Mr J. Fergus, Cashel street. Sergeant Hughes gave evidence in support of both charges. The accused admitted that he had been under the influence of liquor, having, after living on pea soup and porridge on the Waitangi, had a few glasses of beer with friends who had welcomed his arrival. He denied having had any " hand, act, or part " in the breaking of the window. The Magistrate fined him 5s for being drunk, and ordered him to pay the value of the pane of glass, 18s.
