CORRESPONDENCE.

To the Editor of the Glole.

Sib, —I must crave your indulgence for another "brief reply," and let me at once state that, under any circumstances, this ■will be the last. Your correspondent, " A Shareholder in the Union," is evidently an adept at "slating," and, in order to afford him scope for another display of his powers, allow me to show him what the Christchurch correspondent of the Dunedin " Star" says respecting the allotment of the Union shares. Here it is :—" Christchurch, September 26th.—The allotment of shares has, on the whole, given satisfaction. Tho speculative applicants have been greatly sold. Several who applied for over a thousand have had to be content with less than a hundred. To-day shares sold at auction at 10s premium." To prevent unpleasant insinuations being made, it is perhaps desirable for me to say that I am totally unacquainted with the sender of this telegram, and I may add that I could give more "Own Correspondent" opinions in exact accordance with the above, and with which I hare no connection. These show that I was not singular in my idea of the matter. The second part of yesterday's letter is easily answered. I never withdrew my statement to the effect that it was reported Mr Coster was a chief promoter of the proposed Alliance Company, nor do I now. Mr Coster's name was freely associated with the project here, and is so even at the present time.

As to what certain commercial men wrote to the Agency, I have nothing to say. It, doubtless, pleased them, and does not disturb me in the least. Yours, &c, • CHRISTCHURCH AGENT, Press Agency.
