[per press agency.] Wellington, October 2, The agents for McMeckan steamers have received a telegram from Melbourne stating that the Tararua, which broke down and was towed into Port Philip by the Claud Hamilton, will be unable to come over to Hew Zealand this month. The Albion was to leave Melbourne yesterday for Hobart Town, .Bluff, &c., and may be expected hero about the 12th. The Claud Hamilton is expected to sail from there to-day for Hokitika. She is timed to arrive here on the 10th inst. Dunedin, October 2. The following sentences were passed in the Supreme Court this morning : —John Medlin, larceny, twelve months; James McGregor Weir, forgery, twelve months ; Con. Donoghue, larceny, twelve months ; John Gately, criminal offence on a girl eleven years of age, five years penal servitude, and fifty lashes with cat of nine tails ; Stewart Hewton, cutting and wounding, ordered to come up for sentence when called upon. At a preliminary meeting held yesterday afternoon, to consider what steps should be taken to relieve the sufferers by the famine in Southern India, a committee was appointed to arrange for a public meeting to be held in a few days. Messrs Tancred and W. H. Pearson, two members of the commission appointed by the Governor to inquire into the management of the High Schools, have arrived in town, the former on Sunday and the latter on Saturday night. The Commission will commence its labors on Thursday next. [from our own correspondent.] Dunedin, October 2. A true bill has been found in Proudfoot’s case. Mr James Smith, who arrives by the incoming San Francisco mail, has been retained for his defence.
