Dr. Lemon reports that telegraph communication remains interrupted between Bata.via and Singapore, and that European telegrams are now brought, ns were those received on Saturday, by steamer from Singapore to Batavia, The steamers are due at Batavia on October 3rd, 11th, 17th, 27th, and 31st. Tauranga, October 1. A largo fire occurred at Archdeacon Brown’s last night. The kitchen and store-room, full of goods lately from England valued at £2OO, were destroyed. The fire originated from a servant leaving a candle burning while in the dining room at prayers. The buildings are detached. There was no wind, or nothing could have saved the main buildings. Owing to the splended supply of water from under ground brick reservoirs, and all hands being at work, the fire was got under in two hours. Dunedin, October 1. The body of an infant, about a week old, was found in Chapman’s Bush, between Dunedin and Ravensbourne, last evening. The face bore marks of violence. An inquest will he held to-day.| Westport, October 1. The brigantine Sarah Pile sailing in on Saturday stranded on the bar. An attempt to get her off on Sunday failed, hut when her timber cargo is discharged she will likely float. She is insured—hull in the South British for £ISOO, and cargo in the Victoria for £3OO.
