The Siege of Plevna. [SPECIAL MESSAGE TO “ MELEOTTKNE AHGUS.”] London, September 13. The bombardment of Plevna, by the Russians ■wan conuusHced at dsvu on the 7th inetant.

On that day, the Russian troops being everywhere in position, with storming parties ready for the assault, a. heavy lire was opened on the Turkish positions. On the extreme left of the Russian lines was the corps of General Skobelolf, with General Inivitisky’s corps in the centre, and General Krunmer’s troops on the right wing, while General Sotoff, with the Roumanian divisions, forming a semi-circle, completed the investment. An artillery duel was carried on through the whole of Friday, and continued on Saturday (Bth inst.), but with little result. On Saturday night the Russians advanced a heavy battery nearer Plevna, and the bombardment never ceased. On Sunday, a Turkish sortie against the Russian left wing was repulsed with heavy loss, and General Skobeloif, following up the advantages he had gained on Monday, captured the southern heights commanding the town of Plevna and the whole fortified encampment, described as enormously strong. The Gravitza redoubt, in the centre position, was cannonaded for six days from the south and from the north east. The Roumanian troops displayed great bravery, and for taking the Turkish redoubt on Friday the Emperor of Russia conferred forty crosses upon them. Nicsic lias been taken by the Montenegrins, with a battery of guns and war material. The independence of Roumania has been proclaimed by Prince Charles, whose forces, commanded by him, behaved with great gallantry before Plevna. INTERPROYINCIAL. [pec press agency.] The Suspected Murder at Kumara. Kumara, September 27. Ryan, who was brought up at the Police Court to-day, charged with the murder of Daniels, was remanded for a week. Bail was refused. Temuka, September 27. The horse show to-day was well attended by the farmers of the district. A fine lot of horses were exhibited, there being seventeen entries. Dunedin, September 27. To-night’s “ Star” says :—“lt was currently reported in town to-day—and we have good reason for believing the report to be wellfounded —that the proprietors of the ‘ Guardian’ have completed the purchase of the 1 Daily Times,’ and that in a short time the two journals will be amalgamated. Negotiations have been afoot for some time, but the fact has been well keptsecret. Great dissatisfaction prevails regarding the allotment of Union insurance Company’s shares. (prom the correspondent of the press.) Dunedin, September 27. The “ Star” says the rumored purchase of the “Daily Times” by the “Guardian” proprietary is correct. Negociations have been afoot for some time. The auctioneers have entered into a compact to advertise only in the “ Guardian” for two years. Through an informality on committal, Henderson was again brought up at the Police Court charged with perjury in connection with the recent card playing case in a public house. There was a scene between Mr Harris, the defendant’s counsel, and Mr Watt through the former accusing the latter of prompting the prosecution while he was a witness in the case.
