A Russian special official says that Mehemet All unsuccessfully attacked the Russians at Cherkohnaon the Jantra, 21st. They reached the entrenchments, but were compelled to fall back, support failing. The Turkish official despatch says that a convoy mustering five thousand entered Plevna.

The Brindisi mail was delivered yesterday. Regarding the Avalanche disaster, the coroner’s inquest on five bodies is proceeding. Wool —Upwards of three thousand bales were offered to-day. At the closing sales there were improved prices with increased firmness. Foreigners are again competing. Opening rates recovered. Forty thousand were catalogued. Twenty thousand were withdrawn. Wheat shows an upward tendency. Australian, 67s to 69s ; New Zealand, 565. INTERPROY IN 01AL. [pee press agency.] Auckland, September 26. The mail steamer Australia sailed for San Francisco with fifteen saloon and ten steerage passengers from Sydney ; one saloon and three steerage from New Zealand. The Rotorua sailed for Sydney, The criminal calendar comprises one case of forgery and uttering ; one of breaking and entering by three Maoris ; one of Maori horse stealing ; one of obtaining money by false pretences, larceny as a bailee, and issuing valueless cheques ; one of uttering ; forgery ; one of breaking into a dwelling; one of assault with intent to rape ; one of manslaughter ; one of assault with intent to steal. It is uncertain what is to be done with the Asylum patients. There is great difficulty in providing accommodation at the quarantine station, which is unsuitable. At the inquest on Mary Ann Fortune, who was burned at the fire, the evidence by the night nurse shewed that the patients were not visited from five o’clock in the afternoon till the fire broke out, about four in the morning. The inquest was not concluded. Wellington, September 26.
At a meeting of the Chamber of Commerce a circular was read which had been received from the Auckland Chamber of Commerce, making certain suggestions in reference to the amendments of the bankruptcy laws, as far as regards absconding debtors, and asking for some assistance towards bringing the matter under the notice of Parliament. It was agreed that the required assistance should be afforded. The Chamber also have appointed a committee to consider the advisability of co-operating with the Australian Juvenile Industrial Exhibition at Ballarat. The “ Hew Zealand Times” Company have purchased a large additional piece of land adjoining their present property, and intend enlarging the size of the paper and erecting new premises. It is stated, in connection with the publication of the “ Waka Maori” newspaper by the Government, after the resolution of the House that it should be discontinued, that it has not cost the Government one penny for publication since that resolution was passed, the principal portion of the cost being defrayed by the Natives themselves, and the remainder by private subscription of prominent European settlers. Dunedin, September 26. Signor and Signora Majeroni opened at the Princess Theatre last night before a large audience. • The Waste Lands Board to-day resolved that 10,000 acres of land should be opened for settlement at the Moonlight district; also two blocks at Deep Dell. A large deputation from Palmerston waited on the Board and urged the great necessity for deferred payment sections in that district. It was decided that a report should be obtained as to the quality of the land. Riverton, September 26. 'At the Resident Magistrate’s Court to-day, Francis McCarty, on remand, charged with indecent assault, was discharged, the Bench considering that there was not evidence to make out a prima facie case against the prisoner, nor a case upon which a jury could convict.
