POST OFFICE NOTICES.

Mails close at the Chief Post Office for the following' places as under, subject to necessary alterations: — FRIDAY, September 28. For Oamaru, Port Chalmers, Dunedin, and Invercargill, at 11 a.m. For Timaru and Dunedin, per St. Kilda, at 1.20 p.m.; late letters, 2.10 p.m.; railway, 2.30 p.m. train. Letters must be endorsed per St. Kilda. Southern Ports of New Zealand, per Wauaka, Saturday, September 29th. Northern Ports of New Zealand, per Taupo, Monday, October Ist, A post-office will be opened at Chertsey Railway Station on Monday, October Ist. Residents in that district are requested to have their corresxwndcnce addressed accordingly. IMPORTANT. It has been decided to make the following alterations in the periods during which unclaimed letters are to be retained at post-offices before being dealt with for the purpose of being- despatched to the Dead Letter Office :—■ Letters originating within New Zealand to be kept two clear mouths, instead of three . clear mouths. Letters from beyond New Zealand to be kept three clear mouths, instead of live clear months. This alteration will have effect from the Ist pros. Correspondence for the United Kingdom may be forwarded by the steamers of the Orient Line at the ordinary rates of postage for ship letters. Correspondence intended for despatch by the above route should be distinctly endorsed per “Orient Line.” On and after October Ist the post-office hitherto known as Kowai will be called Leithfield. J.
