BOARD OF EDUCATION.

A meeting of the Board was held at 3 p.m. yesterday at the Normal School. Present— Messrs J. Inglis (chairman), H. R. Webb, H. J. Tancred, and J. N. Tosswill. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. BUSINESS DONE BY CHAIEMAN. The Board approved of the business transacted by the chairman since last meeting. BAILWAY EASES. The Secretary for Public Works wrote, in reply, saying that no further reduction could be made in the fares by railway for scholars and students. EEPOBTS ON SCHOOL-EOOMS. Reports from the Inspector on various country school buildings were laid on the table. ELECTION OP COMMITTEES. The Board appointed Monday, Ist October, for the nomination of a member of the committee at Okain's Bay, the poll, if necessary, to bo taken on Bth, and nomination and election of member of South Malvern Committee on same date. AKAEOA. The classification of Mr A. Nicholls to Ist division of 2nd class, and Miss Florence Gillon to be placed in 3rd class, as recommended by the Board of Examiners, was sanctioned. Miss Grillon's division is not to be decided until further proof of skill in teaching and management has been shown, and is to be allowed to sit for 2nd class until then in the optional subjects only. SCHOOL APPARATUS. The Board adjourned for a few moments to inspect an interesting collection of anatomical and other models ; a large variety of plates — some arranged for object lessons, &c, imported by Mr C. C. Howard. On returning to the Board-roorn, it was decided that the chairman be empowered to arrange with Mr Howard for the purchase of his collection. TENDEES. Tenders were opened for erecting gymnastic apparatus at the Normal school, and that of Mr T. Gee was accepted. Mr T. Havell's tender for erecting gas-fittings in the gymnasium was also accepted. Mr Jameson was the successful tenderer for removing some outhouses, subject to the approval of the architect. THE ALLEGED FLOGGING CASK AT LOBUKN. The following telegram was handed to the chairman from Mr J. A. Cunningham, chairman of the Loburn school committee : " Report of (logging case at Loburn utterly false. Letter by mail." KAIAPOI CASE. The Chairman said the Board would have seen the correspondence in the papers that morning relative to a case at Kaiapoi. The whole matter was]news to the Board, as it was the first they had heard of it. It would be within the recollection of members that the Board's name had been used as having written a letter, but such a circumstance was not remembered by any of the present Board, and it was supposed that if such a letter was written, it must have been during the existence of the old Board, though nothing of it could be found when hunting up the papers. It was now seen that the affair was of recent occurrence, and was unknown altogether to the Board before seeing the correspondence in print that day. DKCLATiATIOX OF AGE. A declaration from Mr G. Hallam was read as to the age of his daughter w r ho had taken a scholarship in class C. . The Board accepted tlmdecla ration pending certificate coming to hand. RESERVES. A report from Mr Lean on a number of reserves was referred to the Chief Surveyor. WKST OXFOED. Permission was given, in reply to an appli cation, to run a half-chain road through the educational section there, provided the Road Board fenced both sides of it, and made the road at the extreme westerly end of the section. EDUCATIONAL RESERVES BILL. On an application from Mr Brown to exchange a piece of land being considered, the secretary was directed to write to the Government suggesting that powers to exchange lauds, and dedicate roads, should be inserted in the new Bill. It was decided, with reference to Mr Brown's application, that the' Board have no power to exchange land, and cannot promise to comply with the request should power be given them. BXriEDIXO-S AT TIMAHTT. On the recommendation of Mr Kane, architect, Mr John Blackmorc was appointed clerk of works to supervise the erection of buildings being erected for sohool purposes at Tioaaru,

BALCAIEN. The district committee wrote asking permission to plough the two-acre school section there, and also to fence the land and erect a gate and turn-stile. Tenders for the work were enclosed. The chairman said the conveyance of the land had not yet been completed. The committee were authorised to have the ploughing done at once ; the other work to be commenced as soon as the legal documents connected with the land are signed. WEST CHIUSTCHURCH. Some minor alterations in the master's house, in course of erection, wei'e allowed. TAI TAPU. An application from the district committee to expend £l4 7s in extras beyond contract price was not allowed, as the Board have not funds in hand for this purpose. WEST OXFORD. A letter was read from the committee informing the Board that at their last monthly meeting it was decided to withdraw their resignations. A list of requisites for the new schoolroom was enclosed. It wnsjresolved to comply with the request, with the exception of a set of Johnston's Illustrations of Natural Philosophy asked for. LO> T OBEACH. Some small extras asked for were sanctioned, but the secretary was directed to inform the committee that the Board will not pay for any more items unless they have first been propei'ly brought under their notice and approved by them. SCHOOLMISTRESS TOR TIMARU. A letter applying for permission to appoint a mistress, in place of Miss Hamilton, who is leaving the district, was deferred consideration, the secretary in the meantime to communicate with the committee as to scale. PUPIL TEACHER, WEST CHRISTCHURCH. Master W. A. Robinson was re-appointed pupil teacher at West Christchurch School, under the old Regulations. HEATHCOTE VALLEY. A letter was read from the committee, pointing out the reduction of Miss Sinclair's salary through the average attendance of last quarter being taken, which was an exceptional season against attendance. The Board decided under the circumstances to pay the full amount under the old scale. After transacting some ordinary business, the Board adjourned.
