ADDITIONS TO THE NEW HOSPITAL.

[IEOM THE PKESS.]

A new ward capable of containing twentyfour beds has just been added to the western wing of the new Hospital. It is 68ft. long, 25ft. wide, and 22ft. to ceiling. Five large two-light windows on each side extending nearly to the ceiling, and five square panes between these a few feet from the floor light the ward. The large windows are so constructed as to act as ventilators at the top, and two trunks ornamentally perforated run the whole length of the ceiling, communicating with a small ventilator at each end of the building. The ward is heated by two brick stoves of Cairn pattern, erected on a stone basement, each having two open fireplaces. The smoke is led under the floor by flues to a main stack, and the air ascending from the basement is heated by the flues before passing into the ward. The temperature can be regulated by turning the handle of an iron plate. The hearths and fenders of the fire-places are in concrete, and the ashes are let down through a shoot into a receptacle underneath. The walls are finished with Parian cement, and can easily be cleaned with a wet sponge. The principals and little wood-work seen from the inside are varnished. The ward will be lighted at night time with four gas burners on each side. The offices at the northern end comprise, on ground floor, attendants' room, kitchen, ward scullery, and linen closet, and on the second floor a convalescent ward, or room for special cases, 19ft. x 14ft. At the southern end there are bathrooms, fitted for cold and hot water, lavatory, and water closets. The corridor running in front of the other portion of this wing has been lengthened 100 feet, making altogether a splendid enclosed promenade of 250 feet by 10ft. in width. Seats are placed at intervals for the accommodation of patients, and the view, looking over the newly-laid out grounds to the Domain, is an exceedingly pleasant one. The new addition has been completed in a careful and substantial manner by Mr G. Connon, contractor.
