The Speakek read a letter from Mr Fisher, member for Heathcoto, saying that he saw that a committee of the Legislative Council had reported that the Hon. Mr Peacock had forfeited his seat in the Council by being a member of the Waimakiriri River Board. As he also was a member of that Board, he desired to know what his position was. It was resolved to refer the matter to the same committee as that on Mr Kennedy’s case, the members of which committee are to be appointed to-morrow. THE WASTE LANDS BILL. The Speaker, referring to the question raised by Mr Curtis yesterday as to whether the Waste Lands Committee could consider the proposed new clause in the Waste Lands Bill, to appropriate 25 per cent of land revenue to local governing bodies, said that such an alteration of the Bill was clearly beyond the scope of the committee’s powers and could not be entertained by the committee, THE AVALANCHE. Mr Reid, replying to Mr Babep, said the Government had telegraphed to the AgentGeneral to send a complete list of the Avalanche’s passengers. NEW BILLS. Wanganui Harbor Board Amendment and Borrowing Bill (Bryce), Lyttelton Harbor Board Land Bill (Ormond), Otago Roads Ordinance Amendment Bill (Reid), Native Lands Act Amendment Bill (Rees), Municipal Corporations Act Amendment Bill (Travers). adjournment. On Mr Fitzroy’s motion it was resolved that the House adjourn to-morrow at 5.30 p.m, to Friday, on account of the members’ ball. OTAGO BEANCH EAILWAYB. After some slight further debate, Mr MacANDEEw’s motion about Branch Otago Railways was negatived by 30 to 27. suevbyoes. A committee was appointed, on the motion of Mr Teavees, to consider the regulations in force relating to the examination and admission of surveyors to practice, and the nature of such examination. MAIN HOADS. Debate was resumed on Mr Bastings motion about the Government providing for main arterial roads. Dr. Hodgkinson moved an amendment providing that a schedule of works so to bo undertaken by Government should be laid before the House. Mr Stafford warmly supported the motion if so amended. Mr Bastings accepted the amendment. After remarks from Captain Morris and Mr Woolcock the debate was interrupted by the dinner hour, LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL. Wednesday, September 10. A week’s leave of absence was granted to the bon. Mr Wigley. The Shipping and Seamens Bill was read a second time.
