[agent-general’s telegram.] Plevna still Holding Out. Advance of Sulieman Pasha. The Czar Driven Back. Independence of Roumania. Fall of Hicsics. London, .September 14. After four days cannonade the Levusea redoubt before Plevna was taken by the Russians, with heavy slaughter of 5000. The Russian wounded and killed are not estimated. Plevna is still held by the Turks. Sulieman Pasha is advancing on Gabrova. The Czar with his army was driven back on Biela by Mehemet Ali. The independence of Roumania is proclaimed by Prince Charles, whose forces, commanded by him, behaved with great gallantry before Plevna. Forty of his officers and privates were decorated by the Czar, who was present at the battle. Nicsics has been taken by the Montenegrins, with a battery of guns and war material. On the Czar’s birthday the Austrian Emperor drank the health of his dear friend the Czar. The Turks kill almost all their prisoners. People in a valley near Plevna have been threshing their corn in the open air while the shells were Hying over their heads. A Russian official dispatch from the headquarters at Parodin says that a general assault on Plevna was made on the 11th. There was desperate fighting. The Russians captured four redoubts. The Russian loss included two generals, killed, and one wounded. At daybreak on the 12th they occupied the conquered positions. The St. Leger. [per press AGENCY.] Dunedin, September 17. George Proudfoot was committed for trial this morning tor an alleged rape on Isabella Angus. He was liberated on bail, himself in £IUUO and two surieties of £SOO each.
