MAGISTRATES' COURTS.
CHRISTCHURCH. Saturday, September 15. [Before G-. L. Mellish, Esq., R.M.] Drunkenness. —Three inebriates were each fined os. Vagrancy.—Robert W. Jones was charged on warrant with vagrancy and with obtaining board and lodging at Southbrook by means of false representations. Inspector Buckley stated that Jones had been identified by the person who had laid the information, but it was necessary to have the evidence of the people imposed upon at Southbrook. The accused was remanded till the 18th inst. Dog Poisoning.—Mr Thomas, on behalf of the defendant in the case of Powell v. Bucknall, applied for a rehearing on the grounds that the defendant had been unavoidably absent from the hearing of the case on Wednesday, and that there was a good defence to the action. Plaintiff had sued for and recovered damages for a dog whose death was said to have been caused by poison laid by the defendant in his paddocks. Mr Thomas stated that he had spoken to the plaintiff's counsel, Mr Izard, who, Mr Thomas understood, had no objection to the rehearing.
