CANTERBURY COLLEGE.

A special meeting of the Board of Governors was held at eleven o’clock yesterday morning at the Public Library. Present—The Most Rev. the Primate, Rev. W. -T. Habeas, L)r. Coward, Messrs Taucred, Colborne-Peel, Malet, Eereday, Harman, Inglis, Hamilton, Webb, and Potts. Mr Tancred was voted to the chair. MINUTES. After the minutes of the previous meeting had been read. Mr Colborne-Veel said before the minutes were confirmed he wished to point out that the nature of the reports brought up by the various committees was not shown in the minutes. It had been decided on a previous occasion that these reports should be so entered, and the decision of the Board on the various clauses shown. Mr Malet referred to the same matter. The Chairman said he would instruct the Registrar to enter the reports as desired for the future. LETTERS RECEIVED. Letters were laid on the table from Messrs Deardon, Rev. 0. Turrell, Miss J. Banks, Mr T. Cousins, Miss Hamilton, and Hr. Yon Haast. COLLEGE COMMITTEE’S RETORT. The committee brought up a report recommending these appointments in the Girls’ High School: —Musical instructor and class singing, Mr Parker (at a salary to be arranged by committee) ; first music teacher, Mr Simms £3 13s 6d per pupil for term ; second music teacher, Miss R. Fairhurst, £2 12s lid per pupil for term, and £2 2s per pupil; solo singing, Mr Parker and Miss L. Taylor, at fees to be agreed upon by the committee; harmonium, Mr Parker, subject to such terms as the committee may agree upon; drawing, Mr T. S. Cousins, at £1 Is per lesson of two hours, and £1 11s fid lesson of four hours ; Goi-man, Rev. C. Turrell, at fees to be agreed upon by committee. The committee also recommend the appointment of Mr F. Barber as bookseller to Canterbury College, in terms of resolution of the 7th September; and also asked that they be given authority to engage the services of a teacher temporarily for the Girls’ High School until Miss Hamilton can enter upon her duties. Mr Malet mentioned that some applications had come in that morning for the third music teacher, but the committee had not yet been able to consider them. The report was adopted. MUSEUM COMMITTEE. The Museum committee brought up the following report: The committee having, in pursuance of a resolution passed by the Board on the 7th instant, had an interview with the chairman of the Canterbury Public Domain Board with a view to obtaining additional land for the purposes of the Museum, recommend as follows : That application be made forthwith to the Domain Board for leave to permanently enclose for the purpose of the Museum the additional land comprised within the following boundary, that is to say, commencing at the south-west corner of the Museum building, extending thence westerly in a line in continuation of the line of the south front of the building, a distance of 90ft; thence at a right angle in a straight line to the boundary of Christ’s College ground ; thence easterly along the latter boundary a distance of 90ft, and thence in a straight line to the commencing point as shown by a blue line on the accompanying plan. The committee further recommend that it be urged in support of this application—l. That the present area is quite inadequate for the operations constantly going on in the preparation and setting up of zoological specimens. 2. That hereafter as the contributions to the Museum increase it will be necessary to extend the buildings and such extension must be earned along the ground now sought to be obtained, otherwise the uniformity and general design of the building would be destroyed, and the present western elevation —never intended for a facade—continue an unsightly object in the Domain. 3. That it is expedient the site of the Museum should be vested in the Board of Governors of the_ Canterbury College with as little delay as possible, and that the additional ground now required should be included. Mr Hamilton moved the adoption of the report. Mr Webb seconded the adoption, and mentioned that the chairman of the Domain Board (Mr Harman) was the only member at present in Christchurch. That gentleman had seen the ground the committee desired to acquire, and promised to forward particulars to his colleagues. Mr Malet said he observed by that morning’s papers that the Hon. Mi 1 Hall was introducing an amendment in the Canterbury Domains Act, and possibly the committee might be empowered to ask that gentleman to insert a clause in the schedule which would meet the wishes of the Board. Mr Webb would prefer a separate Bill, and suggested that Mr Montgomery might be asked to introduce it. It was understood that this course would be taken. The report was then adopted. Rev. Mr Habens moved Museum committee bo instructed to confer with the Domain Board and with the Board’s solicitor, and make all necessary arrangements to facilitate the tranafe of the Museum site and extension to tha Board.” Mr Malet seconded the resolution, which was agreed to. GEOLOGICAL SURVEY, A letter w .s read from Dr Von Haast in reply on above subject, saying that Mr Rolleston, as agent for the General Government, having handed over to the Canterbury College everything in connection with the Geological Survey, the Board simply took up the position of the late Provincial Government. It thus appeared evident to him that the Board of Governors took over the responsibility in connection with the publication, and the disposal of the copies rested entirely with them. Attached to the letter wore copies of correspondence to the late Provincial Government, with memoranda thereon. Rev. Mr Habens asked whether the College had accepted this responsibility. It was the first he knew of it, but possibly it might have been done at some meeting from which he was absent. The Registrar replied, not. The Government had simply paid over the amount of £2-12. . . Mr Fcreday said his opinion was that they should first clearly understand whether this work would positively become the property of the Board. Mr Colborne-Yeel said he thought the Board should first know what conditions had existed between the Provincial Government and Dr. Von Haast in this matter, and how it had been transferred to the Board. Mr Webb said the transfer consisted of a minute to the printer. There was some *mngem&nt between the Executive and Dr.

Haast, that lie should have 100 copies for distribution. Mr Fereday thought they ought to refer to the Government, and ask under what conditions this matter had boon handed over to the Board. He would move—“ That the Government bo requested to inform the Board under what condition the publishing of Dr. Haast’s geological report was made over to the Board, and in whom the property is vested ; and t.o forward copy of all correspondence on the subject between Dr. Yon Haast and the late Provincial Government. ’ ’ Dr. Coward seconded the resolution, which was agreed to. Tire Board then adjourned.
