The agent for the Transatlantic Insurance office says that £ISOO of the £2OOO for which Mr Alcorn was insured in that office was re-insured in English offices which have no agencies here. According to a valuation of stock made to-day by experts, it is estimated to have been worth between £9OOO and £IO,OOO. During to-day £SOO were subscribed amongst the mercantile community in a few hours for Mr Alcorn and his children, so keen was the sympathy. Very much more could have been gathered if required. About two years ago it. is said Mr Alcorn came here with £SOOO or £OOOO. By this lire ho loses every shilling. The cash on premises amounted to about £l£oj of which £l4 has been found among the ruins. Lord £nd Lady Normanby have sent letters of sympathy .to Mrs Alcorn. At the inquest on the cl did the jury returned , a verdict of “Accidental Death.” Timaru, September 12. At the adjourned Criminal Sittings of the District Court to-day Joseph Cockroft, jun., was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment with hard labor for fraudulent bankruptcy. Mr Hamersley, counsel for the accused, moved for arrest of judgment, on the ground that it was necessary to havp the attesting witness to the declaration of insolvency. His Honor ruled against him. Dunedin, September 12. The Fever Hospital question was again dis-
cussed by the City Council yesterday. It was resolved that the sanitary committee should enter into negotiation with the gentlemen who took action in the Supreme Court, so that the hospital may be kept open for some time beyond the 30th instant, and that the general committee of the Dunedin Hospital should be requested to take over the Fever Hospital as early as possible. Mr Macandrew has written to the City Council that the Native affairs committee had resolved upon re-opening the Princes street reserves question on the petition from Taiaroa. He suggested that Mr Haggitt bo present on behalf of the Dunedin Corporation. The Council decided to send up Mr Haggitt if possible. Mr Stout has informed the City Council that lie does not feel justified in interfering with the Wharves and Quays Reserves Bill. The Standard Insurance Company have decided to issue the unallotted shares of the company, amounting t0J50,000. The Education Board met to-day, and approved of the action of the High School committee, urging that a commission of inquiry should be appointed.
