Osman Pasha reports that desperate lighting has now been going on for two days in the neighbourhood of Loftscha (Lovatz). The main forces were engaged on both sides. Wo decisive advantage lias been gained by either side, and the fighting still continues. Osman admits a loss of 5000 in killed and 1000 in wounded. The Russian losses cannot be estimated. AUSTRALIAN. Arrived —Ringaroorna. The Arawata sails to-morrow. 1N TERPROVINCIAL. [per press agency.] Fire in Wellington. Child. Burned to Death. Wellington, September 12. A fire broke out at Alcorn's, draper, on the bead), about 8.20 last night, with alarming suddenness. No sooner was the alarm raised than the whole upper storey was in flames. The owner was out at the time. When Mrs Alcorn's attention was directed by the servant she opened the door, and was immediately driven back by a sheet of flame and prevented rescuing her little son, three years old, who was asleep in another room. With some difficulty she passed the other four children on to the roof of the verandah, from which she threw her infant to the bystanders below, and soon after she was assisted down by ladder by her husband, who had just arrived. The other children were handed down to the bystanders. The water was soon playing on the fire, and it would have been shortly mastered but that some volunteers broke the stand pipe in endeavoring to turn more water. A delay of ten minutes occurred before the accident was remedied, and the water again flowing during which the building was blazing furiously, and all the buildings to the leeward seemed doomed, but great exertions confined the fire to Mr Alcorn's. The body of the child was found when the fire was out. The insurances, so far as yet obtainable, arc, on the building — Phoenix, £OOO ; South British, £IOOO. Stock —Transatlantic, £2000; Standard, £SOO. Two branchmen, who were on the verandah when the water was cut off, were severely burnt before they came down. Insurances on the stock had for some time been current in New Zealand and National, but were allowe d to lapse lately. Coach Stuck up by Natives. New Plymouth, September 12. Mrs Bartlett, landlady of the Opunake, was assa/ulted by a native, who was forwarded as prisoner ljy coach to New Plymouth yesterday. When the coach reached Harriett Beach it was stuck up by the natives, who rescued the prisoner. G-REY3IOUTH, September 12. Robert Williamson, mate of the schooner Cleopatra, was fined at the R.M. Court to-day £SO, for harboring and concealing certain uncustomed goods belonging to the wreck of the St. Kilda. PABLIAMENTABY. Last Night's Proceedings. Wellington, September 12. The whole evening was spent in committee on the Education Bill. After further long discussion clause 44 was passed, the words " By leave of an inspector" being struck out in line fifty, and a proviso added that all appointments and dismissals of teachers should be recommended by the committee, and none be made without the committee being consulted. Clauses 45 to 48 were passed. Clause 49 was postponed. Several hours were spent over clause 50. Mr Wakefield moved an amendment to render scholarships open to all children whose parents paid capitation tax. This was lost by 46 to 16. Mr Bowen proposed an amendment to allow of the establishment of open scholarships for all children of the school age. This was carried by 51 to 10. Mr Stout then said denominationalisin had been introduced into the Bill, and he moved —" That the Ohairniau do leave the chair." This was lost by 42 to 18. Progress was then reported, and the House rose at 12-25 a.m.
