On the road to Gabrova, he dislodged the enemy near Yechilagio. Death of M. Thiers. Bombay, September 4, M. Thiers has died from apoplexy. [special telegram to the “ POST.”] London, Friday afternoon. The Czar is seriously ill at Ployesti, owing to recent Russian reverses. The Turks, to the number of 75,000, have renewed the attack on the Schipka Pass; but the Russians, up to the present moment, have contrived to maintain their position. Tremendous slaughter has resulted from these attacks, and the operations of the defenders. The incidents of the battles have been horrible and heartrending. Death of Brigham Young. Brigham Young, the Mormon Apostle, is dead. The institution of Mormonism is in jeopardy, owing to the death of the Head of the Church, INTERPROYINCIAL. [per press agency.] Port Chalmers, September 6. Scarlet fever appears to have assumed a malignant type. Three deaths are reported this morning. Dunedin, September 6, At a meeting of the Presbyterian Synod yesterday, the present Educational Bill was approved of, and the denominational system condemned. The Libel Case. Wellington, September 6, Mr G. Jones, jun., was brought up this morning before three Justices, The Bench ruled that a prima facie case had been made out, and Jones was committed to take his trial at the Supreme Court of Otago. Bail allowed in two sureties of £SO each, and accused in £IOO. PARLIAMENTARY. Last Night’s Proceedings, Wellington, September 6. The Lawrence Municipal Waterworks Bill, the Christchurch City Reserves Bill, the Canterbury Rivers Act Amendment Bill, the Auckland College and Grammar School Bill, were read a second time. The Law Societies Act Amendment Bill, the City of Wellington Loans Act Amendment Bill, passed through committee. There was a long discussion in committee on a resolution for an address to the Governor to take steps to carry out the recommendation of the Goldfields Committee regarding rewards for new discoveries. The motion was carried with an amendment that, in estimating the population on the goldfields, the Chinese are not to count, and that rewards are to be payable for the discovery of a new class of workings on old fields. In committee on the Local Option Bill, clauses 2,6, and S, were struck out without a division. Further consideration was adjourned for a week. The Port Chalmers Library Bill, the Tapanui Pastoral Agricultural Association Bill, the Crown Redress Extension Bill, the No. 2 St Andrew’s Church Trustees Incorporation Bill, the Fine Arts Copyright Bill, and the Wellington Reserves Bill, were read a second time. The Auckland Provincial Council Library Bill, vesting the library in the City Council, passed through committee. The Auckland Grammar School Site Bill was read three times.
