«> The Girls’ High School, Dunedin.— Mr J. H. Pope bus forwarded the following letter to the Otago Education Board: —“ I have the honor to forward you my resignation of the appointment which the Board conferred on me at its meeting on Tuesday last. This appointment was, as you are aware, quite unsought by me, and I am, fortunately, able to relinquish it without regret.” Lyttelton Borough Council. His Worship the Mayor of Lyttelton received a telegram yesterday from the Government, stating that an Order in Council would be issued extending the time for the annual election of Councillors. We understand that Thursday, September 27th, will be the day fixed for the election. Sullen Death ov a Child. —An infant child belonging, to Mr M. H. Berkley, residing in Armagh street, was found dead in bod this ’morning. It was seen last night by its mother at half-past ten o’clock in good health, and this morning when she awoke the child did not seem to he breathing, and on closer inspection was found to bo dead. From its appearance the infant had evidently been overlain. Concert. —The concert last evening at the Oddfellows’ Hall in aid of the Library Fund of the Orphanage was not so well attended as the object for which it was projected deserved. There was a fair attendance, but not so largo as might have been expected under the circumstances. The programme comprised vocal contributions by Messrs Hammond and Melchor Winter, and piano solos by Madame Winter and Mrs Heywood, and selections by Mr Schwarts’s band. The various items were well reodered, »»d ia e|ies redemaacled.

Lyttelton Waterworks.—The Mayor of Lyttelton received a telegram from the Minister of Public Works yesterday, stating that the whole of the surplus plant of the water supply works, with the exception of a few pipes for repairs in the tunnel, would be handed over to the Council. The Pat op Police.— The Victorian Government is offering fresh inducements to the police of that colony to continue in their present service. The members of the Victorian Police Force have received notice from the Chief Commissioner that the Government have made provision for increasing their pay on the Estimates for the present financial year. The salaries for first-class inspectors are to be raised from £275 to £3OO per annum; that of second-class inspectors from £250 to £275, and that of sub-inspectors from £230 to £255. Sergeants and constables of ten years’ standing are to receive fid per diem extra. The increase is to be dated as commencing the Ist of August. Union Rowing Club— The members of this Club held their annual meeting in Eadcliffe’s Hotel, on Wednesday night. Mr G. E. Barnes was voted to the chair. The secretary, Mr Harding, read the committee’s report for the past year. It showed that during the twelve months fifty-three members had joined the club as against forty during the previous year. At the commencement of the season the club had received a new pairoar gig, which had been named the Syren, and the invoices of three new boats had been received, and they would be due early in October by the Waitangi. The first contest of the season had been a pair-oar race for a prize given by Mr Hennah. The winners were Messrs Jacobsen and Walters in the Una. The next contest was a pair-oar race for youths, for cups presented by Mr Gunderson. The winners were Messrs Gapes and Cass in the Una. The club had been represented at the Heathcote and Kaiapoi regattas, and had held several scratch matches, some of them in conjunction with the Canterbury Eowing Club, on Saturday afternoons during the season. The rules had been revised and a set of by-laws had been adopted during the year, and the club’s sheds had been painted. The treasurer’s statement showed that there was a debit balance of £ls lls lid against the club at the bank, and that the outstanding liabilities amounted to £43 8s Bd. The thanks of the club were due to Mr George Gould for assisting the club to procure boats, and to Messrs Hennah and Gunderson for prizes presented. The committee recommended that Mr Eees should be engaged as custodian at £3O a year. The honorary custodian, Mr Sharland, reported on the extent and state of the club’s property, which he valued at £297. Mr Webb, in moving the adoption of the report, congratulated the club on the advance which had been made during the year, and dwelt on the desirableness of importing new and active blood into the membership, but pointed out that the members were in the dark as to the exact financial position of the club ; they did not know the cost of the new boats which were coming from home. Mr Sharland remarked that the entire indebtedness of the club was £59 Os 7d; that the last season had been begun with a debit balance of £4B 2s, and that the total cost of the boats coming from home would be [£lls. Mr Walton seconded Mr Webb’s motion, which was carried. The following gentlemen were elected office bearers for the ensuing year, namely—Mr George Gould, president; Mr Hennah, Mr Montgomery, and Mr J. Anderson, vice-presidents ; Mr H. Thomson, commodore ; Mr Barnes, vice-commodore. Mr Jameson having resigned as treasurer, Mr Petrie was elected in his stead. Mr Harding was elected secretary. Messrs Campbell, Eesteven, Catirer, Hobday,[Sharland, Walters, and Jacobsen were elected as a committee. It was resolved that the committee should obtain the services of a paid custodian. A vote of thanks was recorded to Mr Gould for assistance given to the club. The following new members were elected:—Messrs E. E. Stevens, J. Duncan, E. Mansfield, A. Grossmann, H. Croker, P. Moule,P. Brady, E. J. S. Eckford, and Crothers. The meeting closed with a vote of thanks to the chairman.
