Furious Fighting at Shipka.

Decisive Battle Expected. London, September 1, G. 40 p.m. After furious lighting at Shipka Pass and immense losses on both sides, the Russians still retain possession. Sulieman Pasha is trying to surround the Russians, to destroy their line of communication and prevent their retreat to Gfabrova. Both sides have received largo reinforcements, and Servia is expected to take part in the war. Greece is holding back. G-ermany, supported by the other Powers, complained to Turkey of the treatment of prisoners. The Bank rate has been raised to three per cent. The present is commonly regarded as a period of suspense, but a decisive action is shortly anticipated.

The L bel Case. Wellington, September 3. Mr George Jones, jum, was brought, up at the Resident Magistrate’s Court this morning re the libel action. JIo was represented, by Mr Rees and Mr Ilislop. Mr Izard, who appeared for the prosecution, asked for an adjournient to Thursday next, not being ready to proceed. The defendant’s counsel not objecting the ease was adjourned accordingly. Dunedin, September 3.

The body of Michael Kane, of Ravensbourne, was found Jloating near Logan’s Point on Saturday morning. An inquest will he held to-day. The information against Weir and Sampson for incendiarism was proceeded with on Saturday, but adjourned till to-morrow.
