CHEESEPARING POLICY OF THE N.Z GOVERNMENT.

To the Editor of the Glahe. Sir,— l would like through your paper to inform the.working public of Canterbury of the way we, the late unemployed, are being dealt with by the officials of the above. A number of us were sent by the dispenser of charitable aid to the railway engineer about a fortnight ago to start work. Some thought we should get the same wage as the regular hands, but we were doomed to disappointment. We got five bob a day.. I did not start for three days after the others, so received fifteen bob less. The first week I made full time, last week, I received on Saturday 30s. I have not received any official intimation that I will receive more than the 5s a day next pay, but I, along with others, was informed when about to start work on Monday morning, that I would have to provide my own tools. I asked the informant if I should take those I then had back to the store at once. He told me I could have them for that day. But it would be no good my coming any more without bringing some with me. I don’t know, or care, who the author of the order may be ; but I protest against it as a deliberate swindle. I think the 18s I ought, but didn’t get, sufficient to buy all the tools I shall be likely to want while working for the above. Net only so, let those who have received their wages for years be the first to find their own tools, &c. £ir, the Agent General thinks he will have some difficulty in inducing emigrants to come out. lam afraid he won’t have any difficulty in getting that present of £3OOO, [his tools have put down on the estimates for him, and I think it would look better if they spent it in buying tools for us to work with, instead of robbing the public in the way they intend to do. Yours, &c., THE LATE CHAIIiMAN OF THE MEETINGS ON THE UNEMPLOYED.
