INTERPRO VINOIAL. Wellington, August 29. An information for a criminal libel has been laid against George Jones, and he has been summoned to appear at the Resident Magistrate’s Court on Monday. In a supplement to the “ New Zealand Gazette ” issued this evening, there is a proclamation announcing that the practice of shaving prisoners will cease in all prisons of the colony under the Prisons Act, 1873. The prisoners will have the hair, beard, and moustache cut to a length proper to ensure cleanliness once a fortnight. Members of the Jewish faith in Wellington held a meeting to consider the religious clauses in the Education Bill. The following resolutions were unanimously agreed to : —l. That a clause be inserted setting forth “ The system of teaching in public schools shall be entirely secular, in order to prevent distinction between denominations.” 2. That after word “books,” in clause 55, words “of anon-reli-gious character” be added. 3. That in clause 75 a third division be added, implying" any child prevented from attending school from religious reasons should be counted as present, providing a certificate or letter to that effect be presented by the parents or guardians of such child.” 4. That division three of clause 85 be expunged. 5. That copies of resolutions be forwarded to each of the city members, also to members of Parliament representing other places where there were excongrcgations, with the request that they would use their influence to bring these desired alterations in the Education Bill under notice of the House of Representatives. A similar resolution will be forwarded from the Hebrew congregations in other New Zealand towns.
