MAGISTRATES' COURTS.

CHRISTCHURCH. Wednesday, August 29. (Before G-. L. Mellish, Esq., R.M.) Illegally on Premises.—G-eorge Aucliin, who had been arrested early that morning on the premises of the Christchurch railway station, was lined 10s. Fighting.—John Miller, charged with fighting in the public street opposite the White Hart Hotel, was fined 10s. Larceny as a Bailee. —Mary Edwards was charged with misappropriating a crumb cloth valued at 16s. Constable Firman stated that on the afternoon of the previous day accused came to him in the street and said she wanted to be locked up ; that she had some washing from a Mrs Dickenson on the South Belt, and had pawned it for 6's, and had afterwards taken the ticket to a Mrs Martin, and sold it for Is. Mrs Margaret Dickenson called, stated that on last Tuesday week accused came to her and asked for some washing, and said she was very badly off. Witness gave her a crumb cloth to wash, and the woman said she would bring it back on Saturday. She did not do so. Saw accused that day near the Crown Hotel, and in reply to witness she said she had not pawned it, and. would be sure to come wiili it that day. The cloth produced is the one, and accused had no right to dispose of it in any way. Witness saw it afterwards at Mrs Martin's.- Valued the cloth at 16s. Mr S. Cohen deposed to accused pawning the cloth at his place on the 21st inst. for 6s. It was redeemed on the 24th by Mrs Martin. Mrs Catherine Martin called, deposed to accused selling her a ticket on Mr Cohen's pawn office for a crumb cloth for Is. She said she wanted the money to make up her rent. Witness obtained the cloth produced two days afterwards. His Worship told accused that drink was gradually bringing her lower and lower. This was the first case of larceny against her, and he would let her off lighter than he would otherwise have done. Sentenced to fourteen days' imprisonment', with, hard labor.
