NEWS OF THE DAY.

Lectuee. —It is announced that the Rev. H. C. M. Watson will deliver his very interesting lecture on the “Eastern Question,” on Friday evening, in the Colombo Road School. Death at the Hospital. — A man named John B. Smith, who had been been arrested on the 20th instant at the Victoria Hotel on a charge of lunacy, died yesterday at the hospital. Temuka Football Match. —In consequence of the threatening aspect of the weather on Sunday, [and the probable state of the ground, the match between the Dunedin and Temnka teams was postponed until to-day. Chkistchuhch Pound. —The question of taking over the pound after March next was discussed at yesterday’s meeting of the City Council, and it was resolved to allow the matter to remain in abeyance until the new Council is elected.

Lower Hioh Street. —In compliance with a petition from a number of residents in the South-East portion of the city, the Council have decided that for the future that portion of the Ferry road from, the Caversham hotel to the East town belt shall be called “Lower High street.” Accident. — About a quarter to nine o’clock yesterday morning a horse in a dray belonging to "Vincent and Co., brewers, bolted out of them yard in Colombo street south, and when nearly opposite . Dr. Campbell’s house it came in contact with a spring cart driven by Mr John Brown, timber merchant, Tuam street, throwing Mr Brown out, but not injuring him beyond a shaking. The horse, however, received some injury. When opposite the timber yard of the railway 'station the axle of the dray broke, and the horse was stopped. The horse, it is said, was a young one. East Belt Bridge. —A numerously signed petition was presented to the Council yesterday, 1 ) praying that a bridge may be erected over the Avon, near. Ward’s Brewery. A deputation from the residents was in attendance to support the prayer of the petitioners. It was stated that ground would be given to widen the roadway to the bridge, and that the Avon Road Board would probably subscribe liberally towards carrying out the work. During the discussion that followed, a general opinion was expressed that a bridge at tire spot indicated was very necessary, but in view of the present Council’s term being nearly expired, it would be injudicious to undertake a work which would involve so large an expenditure. The deputation were assured that the petition would have the present Council’s best consideration and be strongly recommended to the incoming Council. Lecture. —The third of the series of lectures now being given in St,_Raid’s Church was delivered last night by the Rev. George Barclay, of Geraldine. The subject was “ Our present Westminster Biblical Revisionists.” The attendance was not at all commensurate with the merits of the lecture. Dr. Campbell occupied the chair. The lecturer opened with an interesting history" ofthe various-transla-tions of the Scriptures from their translations after the captivity of the Jews in Babylon up to 1611, the date of the last Protestant translation of the Holy Scriptures into the English language. He proceeded to detail the various ■ subsequent attempts made in England to have .a thorough .revision of the Scriptures, and described the constitution of the present Westminster Biblical Revisionists. He went on to speak at some length on opinions that have been expressed relative to the probable results of the revision, and then referred to the various manuscripts extant of the Scriptures, fac-similes of several of which were exhibited. In conclusion, he stated that ho had not been able to finish his subject that evening, but would do so on another occasion.
