Turkish Embezzlement of Subscriptions.
Bombay, August 25. < Meheniet Ali lias repulsed fourteen (Russian) battalions at Eski Djuniaia. ;•• A Russian official despatch says that after, desperate and continuous lighting for thirteen hours at Shipka on the :43rd, the Russians maintained their ground. • Suliein'an Pasha telegraphs on the 21st that he had scaled the Shipka heights, and fought fourteen hours. He retained his conquered position. ; ,He had unsuccessfully attacked the Russian' entrenchments, but hoped to succeed.' 1 >-•'■ /j -'- >•> ' ~ ■, , . .„. .Wellington, August 27. The following is the Agent-General's telegram dated' ' ' London, August 24tli. ' There has been a great battle lasting two days at the Shipka Pass.- The Turks were repulsed with great loss. The Turkish armies have not yet joined. Osuuin Pasha's attack on Selvi was repulsed. Rustchuck lias suffered much from the continued bombardment. Three hundred Cossacks who had laid down their arms were slaughtered in cold blood. The Russians are mobilising in great force. An important battle is expected. There is an insurrection in Crete, where many Turks have been killed. The alleged Russian atrocities are said to be chielly fabrications of the Turks. The Stafford House subscriptions for the wounded Turks have almost all been embezzled by the Turkish officials, and the soldiers are left without surgical aid.

Libel Case. Wellington, August 27. The" Waka Maori" libel case was commenced in the Supreme Court this morning, before the Chief Justice. The counsel for he plaintiff were Messrs Macassey, Stout, and Bell; and for the defence Messrs Connolly Bullcr, and Chapman. Mr Macassey opened he case for the plaintiff. A good deal of interest is taken in it, and the Court ie cyo-i'ded in every yt\gb.
