Ten regiments of Russian cavalry, and thirty-five thousand infantry, with a hundred and ten guns, attacked Mukhtar Pasha’s army near Kars yesterday, and fought all day. The Russians were compelled to fall back, with a loss of twelve hundred. The Turkish loss was one hundred. The Russians have re-occupied Kustendji. AUSTRALIAN. Sydney, August 21. The San Francisco mail steamer Australia has arrived. INTERPROYIN CIA L. Wreck of a Steamer. Five Lives Lost Auckland, August 21. The steamship Lionel was wrecked while entering Whangape Harbor. Five men were drowned. There was a heavy break on at the time. The first wave broached the vessel to. The second breaker turned her over. All hands on board were drowned. One man stuck to the wreck till after sunset. Strenuous efforts were made by those on shore to save him, but these failed. A boat from the shore was manned three times, and was upset each time. Nelson, August 21. A share in the Queen Bee Wreck Recovery Company, the original price of which was £SO, is now being sold for £320. Dunedin, August 21. A general meeting of the committee of the Otago Agricultural and Pastoral Association was held to-day. Several delegates from country associations were present. A liberal programme was adopted. Mr Clayton, Colonial architect, is now in a very critical condition. In consequence of some alleged suspicious circumstances, there is to be an inquiry as to the cause of the fire which occurred ou the premises of Messrs Weir and Samson, A petition with 1600 signatures is being sent to Wellington, asking the central authorities to retain the Fever Hospital, which the Municipal authorities close next month. Scarlet fever is on the increase in town.
