THE LOCAL BOARD OF HEALTH.
To the Editor of the Globe. Sir, —In your report o£ the proceedings of tiie Local Board of Health, it is mentioned that application has been made to amend the existing Act, but no information is given as to the nature of tiie alterations. As the Board is the same as the Drainage Board, it will be as well for the district to enquire what powers beyond those already in force, are asked for. We must remember that the Drainage Board tried their little game last session in the matter of extended rating power and stopping the free use of the artesian supply. Perhaps there is an application for rating power to provide for more extravagance under the Health Act, If so, it will be as well that ratepayers should know to what extent, in order to put a veto to further powers in that direction. We have rating enough in all conscience, and the time has arrived that strong and persistent efforts should be made to check this mania for rating or it will land us into such a state that to live will be a very hard matter for most of us. I trust that this humble endeavour will bear fruit and wake up the dormant powers of those who will be affected by the vagaries of the Drainage and Local Boards to utterly crush them. * Yours, Ac., CLIO.
