CHRISTCHURCH. Tuesday, August 21. (.Before G. L. Hellish, Esq., RM.) Dbunk and Disohdeely. George Hawkins, arrested for being drunk while in charge of a horse and cart, was fined 10s ; Johanna Gallagher, for being drunk and using obscene language, was fined 40s and cautioned; Thomas Murphy was fined 60s; Robert Adams, for being drunk, obstructing and resisting the police, was fined 40s. Three first offenders were each fined ss, and one who had been admitted to bail 10s and Is 6d cab hire. Labceny ab a Bailee. —Alfred Radelle, with two aliases, was charged with this offence. accused the previous day. When he told him the charge accused said he was never out of misfortune now, and that he had taken the quilt to a woman to get washed, but she would not do it. He had then taken it into town and pawned it, as he was under the influence of drink at the time. Witness obtained the article from Mr Cohen, pawnbroker. Mrs Annie Philpott, residing at St. Albans, stated that about the 25th July accused came to her place and asked for the loan of half-a-crown. She did not lrnd him any money, and he went away. He returned again and asked whether she could let him have some sewing or washing for his wife. Witness gave him a quilt, which he was to return washed the following Friday. The quilt produced was the one. Accused did not return. Valued the article at 255. Henry Winney, assistant at Mr Herman's, deposed to accused pawning the quilt produced on 27th July for 10s. It was subsequently redeemed by a boy. S. Cohen deposed to purchasing a pawn ticket from accused for 2s 6d on 2Sth July for the quilt produced, which witness sent for to Herman's. Sentenced to three months' imprisonment with hard labor.
