BOARD OF HEALTH.

Monday, August 20. A meeting of the Board was held at 1.30 p.m. Present—Messrs Hobbs (chairman), Duncan, Jones, and Tancred. chairman’s report. The Chairman said that while in Wellington he had waited on Hon. Dr. Pollen, and requested the concurrence of the Government in the Act they wanted to bring in. Dr. Pollen said he saw no objection to the Act being brought in. He had also waited on Mr Stevens, who had consented to take charge of the Bill in the Lower House, and on lion. John Hall, who would take charge of it in the Upper. inspector’s report. The report of the Inspector of Nuisances was read. TIME OF MEETING. Mr Duncan gave notice to move that the meetings of the Local Board of Health be held prior to that of the Drainage Board. PHILIPSTOWN. A letter was read from Mr C. R. Blakiston, as agent for Mr Philips, calling the attention of the Board to the fact that he was unable to abate the nuisance, as requested, in Creek road, as there was no drainage. It was resolved that Mr Blakiston be requested to fill up the portion of the creek complained of. WILIiMER STREET. A letter was read from Dr. Townend calling attention to the bad state of the drain in Willmer street, off Durham street. The Board resolved that the matter be referred to the City Council. GLOUCESTER STREET BATHS. A letter was read from Mr A. W. Haider, complaining of the baths at the Gloucester street school. It was pointed out by the writer that the baths leaked out, and mixing with the overflow of the cesspools, would become a serious nuisance to the nighbourhood. The Chairman said that he had obtained power from Mr Carrutliers to use the railway engine to pump out the bath, but ou bis return from Wellington he was informed that if the water was pumped out the walls would collapse. Mr Tancred moved —“ That letters be written to the Board of Education and East Christchurch School Committee asking them to make the bath watertight, and that the Board of Health would see that the owners of adjoining properties abated the nuisance.” Mr Jones seconded the motion, which was agreed to. FERRY ROAD. The letter from the Star Brewery Company as to the bad state of the Ferry road drain referred from the Drainage Board was read. Mr Jones moved, “ That all steps should afc once be taken to abate the nuisance com*

plained of, and that Mr Bell should be requested to take any necessary steps.” Mr. Duncan seconded the motion, which was agreed to. SANITARY COMMITTEE. Tho report of the sanitary committee was read, recommending the acceptance ol the tender of Mr John Anderson fur sixty pans. The report was adopted. MEDICAL OFFICER’S REI’ORT. Mr Tancred moved “ That tho medical officer be requested to send in a report on the health of the district generally.” Mr Jones seconded the motion, which was agreed to. The Board then adjourned.
