CHRISTCHURCH. Saturday, August 18. (Before Dr. Deamer and John Anderson, Esqr., J.P.’s) False Pretences. James Little was charged with obtaining money and goods by false pretences. Detective Benjamin deposed that he arrested accused on a telegram produced. Prisoner was remanded to August 21st, to be brought up at Oamaru, bail to be accepted, accused in £3OO, and two sureties in £l5O each. Breach of the Peace.-—'W. Broad was charged with committing a breach of the peace in view of a constable, at the Christchurch railway station, by knocking a man down. Fined 10s, Vagrancy. —George Smith, on remand, was charged with having no visible means of support. The case had been remanded from last week to give the accused an opportunity of leaving Christchurch. There was no appearance of accused and he was formally discharged. Larceny. —John Templeton was charged with stealing boots to the value of £2 10s, and a vest valued at£l, from William Barlow. Detective Benjamin deposed to arresting accused and finding the boots produced in his room. Accused said lie did not steal (hem, but found them outside. Knew a house occupied by Mr Barlow. Had seen a portmanteau there, but the lock was tampered with. W. Barlow deposed that he occupied a house in Gloucester street. The accused lived next door. On Monday last went up country, leaving the house all right. There was a portmanteau left in a room. On returning found it had been tampered with. Missed two pairs of boots and a black waistcoat. Boots produced belong to witness. Accused came to his house yesterday and said ho heard some things were missing, but he hoped Mr Barlow did not think he was guilty. Accused declined to make any statement, beyond saying that ho found the boots outside the place. Sentenced to one mouth’s imprisonment with hard labor.

LYTTELTON. Saturday, August 18. [Before W. Donald, Esq., R.M., and T. H, Potts, Esq., J.P.] Refusal of Duty. —John McDonald, carpenter on board the barque Nardoo, was charged by Captain Paul with this offence, and sentenced to one week’s imprisonment. Drunkenness. —W. A. Walker, charged by Constable Johnstone with this offence, was lined'lOs.
