MAGISTRATES’ COURTS.
CHRISTCHURCH. Thursday, August 16. [Before W. Donald, Esq.,. R.M.] Wife Desertion. —James Gamble, was brought up on remand charged with this offence. Inspector Feast said he had been unable to obtain the requisite information from Westland, and asked for a further remand. The prisoner was remanded till tomorrow. Assault. —Alexander Fleming was charged with assaulting Elam Gilbert on the 28th August. The prosecutor asked to have the case adjourned for a week in order to obtain witnesses. Case adjourned till 23rd instant. Mary Harley was charged with assaulting John Richard Miller. No appearance. LYTTELTON. (Before H. R. Webb and H. Allwright, Esqs., JT.’s.), Vagrancy.— Nicholas Tostevine, who, was stated by Robert Connal, night watchman, and Sergeant Major O’Grady, to have been hanging about the wharves and railway promises for some time, without any visible means of support, was sentenced to fourteen days’ imprisonment with hard labor. Assault. —James Loader was accused of assaulting William Graham on the 10th August. Mr H. N. Nalder appeared for complainant. The Bench fined accused 40s and costs £1 8s 6d, or in default one week’s imprisonment.
