(FROM THE CORRESPONDENT OF THE PRESS.) Wellington, August 15. The debate on the Native Lands Bill was continued briskly last night, Mr Travers and Mr Gisborne speaking ably against it. On a division the debate was adjourned till Thursday, and may continue over Thursday night, but the delay will not weaken the secured majority of the Government. To-day discussion has been progressing on Mr' Stout’s motion as tb the electing of Governors. Mr Donald Reid has been roused by a continuance of offensive personal remarks during the - debate, by Mr Rees and others, and is now defending himself with grea , vigor and strength. There is nothing of importance on the Order Paper for to-night. The debate on the Local Option Bill will probably be continued. [per press agency.] Mr Wakefield, upon the motion to go into Committee of Supply, is to move —“ That it is expedient (1) That the system of free selection with fixed price of £2 per acre for all blocks containing more than twenty acres be applied to all Waste Lands of the Crown throughout the colony, including confiscated lands. (2.) That all blocks not exceeding twenty acres be submitted to public auction at the upset price of £2 per acre for rural lands; and £l2 10s per quarter acre town lands. (3.) That one-fifth of the land revenue be paid directly to the county fund of county within which such revenue arises. ’ (4.) That the remaining four-fifths of the land revenue he paid into the Consolidated Fund for ordinary appropriation by House. (5). That all pre-emptive rights cease. (6) That costs and expenses of the following services be defrayed from colonial revenue, viz.: All existing Departments of Government, including the Civil List, interest and sinking fund of all loans whether colonial or provincial, primary education, gaols, police, lunatic asylums, public’ railways, arterial roads, bridges, subsidies to local bodies. (7) That the cost and expense of the following services be flefrayed by local bodies : Roads, bridges, and other local public,works other than arterial, hospitals, charitable institutions, penitentiaries, and reformatories not being public gaols.
